There's too many elements that just don't add together well for this finale.John Nolan is a man in his 40s who, after some life-changing events, packs up his belongings and moves to Los Angeles to become a cop. There's probably more but that's all I can think of so far. He needs enough time to find and dispose/relocate the evidence: the time he's given just isn't enough by any stretch of the imagination. If there was an imminent search on John's house, there's no way he'd go running back. They mention 10,000 cops but somehow Nolan and Armstrong are quicker than most of the cops it feels like. It doesn't make any sense that he went in alone. Even if he found evidence, it wouldn't be admissible. He would need extenuating circumstances or a search warrant. That's two major violations.īreaking into Armstrong's house was illegal. Leaving Armstrong at the house unattended is a big violation of his health and the suspect is unsecured, cuffing and running is not good enough.

There's nothing that ties him into anything except what was planted.

He doesn't have the access level to deal with anything. As a rookie, he doesn't have access to the classified detective files that actually Armstrong was working on. It doesn't make sense given he's always had a T.O. The suspension of disbelief isn't executed correctly.īlaming John Nolan, a rookie, just wouldn't work. They have broken the wall of realism continuously and it usually occurs well-enough, but this time it just didn't feel right. Having new characters being disposed of isn't compelling in the slighest (especially in the long-term), as we know with that other rookie who died, people complained that it wasn't emotional as we never knew this character before the start of the episode. And overall, progressing characters at faster rates is great, albeit that Nolan may have become too good of a cop too quickly.

I think this is a non-issue and is something procedurals need more of, bravery, not characters immune due to time (even if there aren't many reoccuring characters). One common complaint is how they used Armstrong, whilst everyone predicted it weeks ago, they hated that the audience built a rapport with him and they're throwing him out.
